Cards. Pens. Postage. All things that we take for granted in the United States. What happens to our American soldiers deployed overseas who don’t have access to these items? We at W.H.E.A.T. provide stationery, pens, and paper to soldiers overseas so that they can send notes to loved ones at home in the United States. However, the cost is often prohibitive as we focus on the current needs and wants of the soldiers (e.g., personal hygiene items, beef jerky, granola bars, sporting equipment, and clothing). This all changed when W.H.E.A.T. received an email from the coordinator of the Splitcoast Stampers.

Splitcoast Stampers is an online cardmaking group that donates cards every month to a specific organization. The card makers have donated their pieces of art to hospice centers, children’s organizations, and pregnancy centers. Each card is handmade and unsigned so that the receiving organization can use the cards or provide them to their clients (soldiers) to send to their families. There isn’t a specific number of cards donated each month because each artist creates cards and mails them directly to the receiving organization. Splitcoast Stampers is a purely voluntary group.

As the receiving organization for August 2020, W.H.E.A.T. received “Happy Anniversary,” “Happy Birthday,” “Thinking About You,” blank notecards, and holiday cards. The Splitcoast Stampers’ packages arrived from all over the United States. Combined, the group provided 2,082 donated cards, several hundred of which W.H.E.A.T. immediately mailed along with pens and stamps to our soldiers overseas. (W.H.E.A.T. includes a stamp and pen for every card so that the receiving soldiers can select the perfect card to send to a loved one back home, write his/her message, and then find an avenue to send the special, handmade surprise card to a loved one back home.)

What do these cards mean to us at W.H.E.A.T.? Everything. In a chaotic time in our country’s history, the exquisite handmade cards prove that Americans from across our country will come together for a common cause and to support our soldiers. The Splitcoast Stampers spent over 1,000 volunteer hours, combined, creating individual works of art. Not only will the cards brighten the days of our American soldiers, but we can also imagine the delight of the receiving family members/loved ones in America who open their mailboxes. They will find a one-of-a-kind, handcrafted, beautiful work of art from a soldier deployed overseas.

“Thank you” Splitcoast Stampers for sharing your love of cardmaking with us, our American soldiers overseas, and their families/loved ones. You make us proud to be Americans.
